Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (A mini review)

Grabbed via impawards.com

Only Abraham Lincoln can sit with such a straight face above a movie title that screams "Direct to DVD B-movie". This might even be fit for a horror comedy if it had actually played out that way.

Didn't read the book (yes, the movie's actually based on a New York Times Bestseller of the same name) and wasn't really expecting much from a movie with a title fit for a comedy flick. Here's the book cover.

But, after catching the movie a few days ago at an advanced screening (Thank you F*** Movie Mag!), it was definitely better than what I'd expected. It was a nice touch to mix in the Civil War together with Abe Lincoln going around killing off vampires, showing off twirling his axe, and going off to kill some more vampires.

Admittedly, the movie does slow down a bit when it gets around trying to make the characters more relatable to the audience (i.e. the talking parts, the flashbacks). But the pace rockets up whenever generous doses of blood splattering action sequences fill the screen. There are also numerous slo-mo sequences to see every limb get cut off, every head decapitation in gory detail, every drop of blood spraying off, and so on.

Bottom line: The 3D was a little gimmicky. The movie could have been better paced, but for what it's worth, it's about a president kicking some serious vampire butt with a mean axe. It's about as good as it can get.

Now, if only they had added this scene into the movie...

I would have been so much more happier.

Oh yes indeed.

This movie reminds me of a cheap horror flick i hve watched few years back about an Elvis Presley impersonator and a mentally sick man who thinks he's the US President. The two of them unite to kill a mummy who is haunting an old folks home, really funny cos the Elvis is fully dressed up in his high collar star-studded concert jumpsuit and the mental guy is in a wheelchair.

The premise looks ripe for bundles of laughs! Wow,and Bruce Campbell's in it! :D Now I just have to see this movie!

I did a quick Google search, and I think the movie you're talking about is called "Bubba Ho-Tep". (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0281686)

This one could have definitely been a lot more ridiculous and insane, like the premise seemed like it promised, but I still had fun with it. Surprised this actually did well at all at the box office. Totally thought that people weren't all that interested in the idea of Honest Abe, hacking up vamps, but I guess there is a big enough crowd out there for this. Good review H.
